Literally. He fascinates me. Not as an actor. At least not the way he acts in movies. But I am fascinated by his acting in 'real life', although granted, I don't know him in his real life, just in what I see in interviews, see on the net, read in biographies, etc. But that's as close as I'll ever get to him. Hopefully.
So...this may be old news by now, but a video is floating around the web, that is a 10-minute foaming at the mouth, Tom-Cruise style, montage about Scientology. Now, I'm not going to get into a discussion about Scientology, per se, because if that's what you believe in, that's what you believe in. I will say that if I were a Scientologist, I'm not sure I'd want Tom Cruise as our 'spokesperson'. Although his fame does bring some attention, I'm not sure how much credibility he really adds.
But I digress - this video is 10-minutes long, but well worth it. Well worth it. I kind of faded in and out of paying attention to the actual content, because the message is basically one thought spread out over ten minutes, but I couldn't help thinking when I watched it:
1. I would love the camera to flash to the person he's speaking to - I know you're expecting a journalist, perhaps Morley Safer or whomever, but I imagine either a mirror or Suri in a high chair. Probably the mirror. When you watch it, keep it in mind.
2. At about the five minute mark, TC makes a wildly hilarious joke that only he gets and laughs - no - guffaws - quite abruptly. Maybe its an inside joke? This is sort of why he creeps me out - you know the type: the person who laughs the loudest (or is the only one laughing at their own jokes)....awkward.
3. WTF is up with the music? I really thought it would pick up or change into a tune from Top Gun. Not Take My Breath Away, mind you, but something inspiring. Although, the James Bond theme at the end was classic. Seriously.
Anyhoo - if you have ten minutes to spare, here is the link:
TC Talks Sincerely About Scientology
Enjoy
I'm all for making fun of TC (except when he is running, I won't touch that) but I actually disagree with you on the craziness of the video. Sure he speaks how only he could speak, and the laughing was a bit odd. But when you listen to it, does the message sound any different than that of anyone who is passionate about their faith? If you dubbed the word Christianity over, every time he says Scientology would anyone think it sounded crazy?
ReplyDeleteIt is completely exceptable to poke fun at Scientology while totally PI to scoff at the mainstream religions, but how different is it? If Elron's book had been written 2000 years ago, instead of 50 would that make it legitimate?
My name is John Travolta and I approve this message.
Well, perhaps the words are different but the message is essentially the same (of Scientology, that is). And I think you're point about making fun of Scientology b/c it's 'new' is dead on. But, I think Tom Cruise would still sound crazy regardless of the religion he was touting, including Christianity.
ReplyDeletePS. I loved your work in Hairspray. You go, girl!
